Allyson Adams is an abstract artist who uses her art to tell her truth.

Her first quilt was for a friend, yellow flannel cut into 12 inch squares and sewn back together, she was 14 years old. Now living in Santa Fe, her studio is where she goes to create her works. Starting by dying her fabric, designing, sewing, and quilting each piece.

She loves every stage of quilt making. Dying Pimatex cotton leads to complex, rich colors with depth that cannot be found in commercially produced fabrics. She has never found a color she doesn’t like.

The design wall in her studio is the starting place for all of her quilts. It is where she is able to let go and play with colors and shapes, never worrying about how the piece will be sewn together.

Engineering the machine-pieced quilt top is an enjoyable challenge. Each quilt is started without a clear plan, letting each quilt decide what it will become.
All quilts include two batts, one made of 80% cotton and 20% wool, the other 100% wool. This allows for increased textural interest once quilted.

Once quilted, each piece is finished by hand.

Quilting is drawing with thread, meditative and relaxing.
